If Not Now, When?

Hope For Better

I’m really good at coming up with projects I know I’ll never finish.  It’s not that this is my intent, it’s just that I rarely play to my strengths as a person.  I’m emotional, and sometimes (most times) this is a drawback.  My interest in things is often dependent on how I’m feeling in general.  If I’m down, throwing myself in to something creative isn’t usually the way I roll.
What this usually means is that I’m likely to not follow through on something if all I want to do is sleep.  It wouldn’t be so bad, except that then you get those situations where I end up having to post 23 pictures to my blog at once in an effort to cry and catch up because I couldn’t take the 5 minutes every day to do it.  Trying to post a picture everyday doesn’t really play to my strengths, as a matter of dedication, and as someone who can’t always find something to take a picture of.
So, as much as this project is a way of starting my blog over and searching for a pretend new begining, it’s also a way for me to reorganize other projects that do interest me, in ways that might help me be more productive in the long run.  My goal is not to put hard goals on everything, in hopes that the words and the images come a little more organically.  Hopefully that will make things not only sound better, but also less forced and less bitter.
That’s not to say that I don’t long for some structure.  Here, then, are my intial ground rules and ideas for these new pages:
Blog – updated as necessary.  To only be written when I really have something to say.  Try to elimate those quick posts based out of pure emotion, and try to promote a more thoughful approach to writing about myself.  I’ve discovered recently that essay type writing on myself can be very rewarding, and might actually be something I’m not terrible at.  I’d like to do more of that, and my goal is to use the creative nonfiction stuff I wrote back in college as the template for this new blog.
Writing – updated as necessary.  To be written in when I have something I feel is worth sharing.  One hopes there won’t be the huge gulfs in between postings like the last one.  The truth is I’ve been feeling more confident with my writing abilities, and really, I need to get more writing done on the regular anyway.  I want to try to avoid posting “old” stuff, which means anything getting posted is either new or a revision of something older.
Music – Since I haven’t been productive with my own stuff, and I haven’t had anyone to make a mix tape for, I got the idea that maybe I could start sharing some of my own favorite songs.  Updates will come on Tuesdays when possible, because when I think new music releasing, I think of Tuesdays.  I’ll also provide commentary for each song and why I picked it, in an effort to add to the amount of writing I do per week.
Pictures – Clearly, updating every day was a bad call on my part.  It left me settling for the occasional picture that wasn’t great, and I didn’t always have the motivation to post on a given day.  My hope here is that I can update at least twice a week, looking at Wednesday and Sunday.  There is a writing component with this as well, to give the pictures a bit of context and to keep me writing.  Pictures will not always be current;  instead, I’m going in order on my phone, picking the next good picture after the one posted.  It’ll give things kind of a serial feel, I hope.  More like watching a season of a tv show instead of a random collection of images.  My theory/hope, anyway.
Random – Updated constangly.  If the blog proper is going to be dedicated to well thought out posts, I’d still like to have the freedom to occasionally just post something small that happens to be in my mind at the time.  My mind does occasionally go off on weird, silly tangents, and occasionally I like to share them with others.  And sometimes it’s nice to have those open, unguarded moments.  I’d still like to avoid those blogs of passion, but sometimes I don’t need to drop 500+ words on a subject when a sentence will do.
This Page – Updated once a week, on Sundays, to discuss the recent updates to the other pages.  If you don’t want to check every day, you can come to this blog once a week and find out about all the things you’ve “missed”.
And thus, this is my manifesto/ruleset/hailmarypass of a write up for what I hope will happen.  I make no promises that I’ll be able to follow through on any of it, but I feel good about it right now.  Part of it is the idea of starting over, of a new begining, and part of it is that I’m actually kind of in to the designs I’ve picked out, and I want to make these pages good.  I want them to be engaging.  I hope they are, and I hope you enjoy.
